Play 345: Sketchy Truth

CHARACTERS
VINCENT, 17
MICHAEL, 17

VINCENT
I’m in a weird situation.

MICHAEL
What is it?

VINCENT
So, there’s this Spanish field trip tomorrow.

MICHAEL
Yeah?

VINCENT
And I’m feeling pretty sick so I’m staying home sick.

MICHAEL
So?

VINCENT
Well, on Monday I told my teacher I couldn’t go because my band teacher had told me I needed to play at this assembly tomorrow. It turned out the assembly was moved to Monday, so I actually could go.

MICHAEL
So?

VINCENT
That’s not it. So then today, my band teacher said I had to stay at school because it’s the last long block class before the concert.

MICHAEL
So then why would you have gone on it?

VINCENT
They figured out a way I could go to band and then meet them at the train station for the trip.

MICHAEL
Oh.

VINCENT
Yeah.

(Beat.)

MICHAEL
That’s a weird series of events.

VINCENT
I know. Like, I can’t go, oh wait, I can! Oh no I can’ again. Oh, I can again! I’m sick.

MICHAEL
Yeah.

(Beat.)

VINCENT
It sounds kind of sketchy.

MICHAEL
It does.

VINCENT
My Spanish teacher is going to give me a lot of shit.

MICHAEL
Especially considering who you have.

VINCENT
True.

(Pause.)

VINCENT
I’m fucked.

MICHAEL
Yup.

(Beat.)

On the plus side, you get to stay home tomorrow.

VINCENT
True enough.

(Blackout.)
