Play 302: Thanks

CHARACTERS
DAVID, late 20s
ANNA, late 20s

(They sit at a table eating dinner.)

ANNA
Do you like it?

(Beat.)

DAVID
It’s…okay.

ANNA
What’s that supposed to mean?

DAVID
Honestly?

ANNA
What?

(Beat.)

DAVID
No.

(Beat.)

ANNA
You don’t like it?

DAVID
It’s a little bland for my taste.

(Beat.)

ANNA
You could show a little more appreciation.

DAVID
You asked.

ANNA
You could’ve at least thanked me for making you dinner.

DAVID
Thank you for making me dinner.

(Beat.)

ANNA
If it weren’t soaked in hostility it might actually mean something.

DAVID
Well what the hell do you want me to say?

ANNA
I want you to appreciate what I do for you.

DAVID
I do.

ANNA
You have a funny way of showing it.

DAVID
You asked.

ANNA
So what?

DAVID
So I should’ve lied? Told you I liked it?

ANNA
No.

DAVID
Then what?

ANNA
You could’ve said thank you.

DAVID
Oh, like, thanks for the terrible dinner?

(Beat.)

ANNA
It wasn’t terrible.

DAVID
It was.

(Pause.)

ANNA
I think you need to leave.

DAVID
Funny, that’s just what I was thinking.

(Blackout.)
