CHARACTERS

1
What’re you up to?

2
Writing.

1
What?

2
A screenplay.

1
Oh, cool. Can I see it?

(Beat.)

2
Yeah, sure.

(Pause.)

1
Umm…

2
What?

1
No offense but…

2
You don’t like it?

(Beat.)

1
What the hell is this?

2
It’s experimental.

(Beat.)

1
Why?

2
Because it’s original.

1
No, I mean what purpose does it being that weird serve to the script?

2
Purpose?

1
Is there any reason you’re doing it besides that it’s original.

(Beat.)

2
Yes.

1
What is it?

(Pause.)

1
You don’t have any idea do you?

2
Shut up.

(Pause.)

1
Are you going to change it?

2
No.

1
Why?

2
People will think it’s brilliant.

1
No they won’t.

2
Because they won’t get it, they’ll assume that there must be something behind it but that they’re too dumb to get it. So they’ll convince themselves they like it so they feel smart.

(Beat.)

1
Know what’s depressing?

2
That I’m right?

(Beat.)

1
Yeah.

2
I know.

(Beat.)

Worked well enough for Mulholland Drive.

1
I’ve never seen that.

2
Really?

1
Yeah.

2
Don’t.

(Blackout.)
