Play 306: A Little Fun

CHARACTERS
DAN, 17
JEREMY, 16

(Jeremy is sitting off to the side at a party. Dan walks over and sits by him.)

DAN
How’s it going?

JEREMY
It’s alright I guess.

DAN
What, you not having a good time?

JEREMY
No, not really.

DAN
How come?

JEREMY
I don’t know.

(Beat.)

DAN
I have an idea.

JEREMY
What?

DAN
Here.

(He hands Jeremy a drink.)

JEREMY
No thanks, I’m fine.

DAN
Come on, a little won’t hurt.

JEREMY
I don’t drink.

DAN
Well, now’s not a bad time to start then.

JEREMY
No thanks.

DAN
It’ll help, I promise.

JEREMY
How?

DAN
Loosen you up a little, looks like you could use it.

JEREMY
I’m loose enough.

DAN
You’re sitting over here by yourself.

JEREMY
So?

DAN
It’s party, that’s no way to act.

JEREMY
Whatever.

DAN
You’ll never have fun being so antisocial.

JEREMY
I’m plenty social.

DAN
Oh yeah, I’m sure you’ve charmed the hell out of that chair there.

JEREMY
Shut up.

DAN
Just have a drink, it’ll help you not be so shy.

JEREMY
I’m fine.

(Beat.)

DAN
What’d you come here for if you were just gonna sit in the corner sober?

JEREMY
You invited me.

DAN
Yeah, I thought it’d be good for you. You don’t have enough fun.

(Beat.)

JEREMY
I have fun.

(Pause.)

DAN
So you’re sure you’re good?

JEREMY
Yeah.

(Beat.)

DAN
I’m gonna go back in.

JEREMY
Okay.

DAN
If you change your mind, just come and find me. Trust me, it’ll be more fun than sitting here.

JEREMY
Okay.

DAN
Take it easy.

(Dan walks off, he leaves the drink on the ground.)

(Pause.)

(Dan looks down at the drink, pauses, then shakes his head.)

(Beat.)

DAN
(To himself)
Eh, why not?

(He picks up the drink, takes a long sip, and shudders slightly.)

(Blackout.)
